It's in your hands – Nelson Mandela International Day 2013 launch
Wednesday, June 19, 2013 saw the launch of the fourth Nelson Mandela International Day at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Houghton, Johannesburg. Unanimously adopted in 2009 by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly as Nelson Mandela International Day, 18 July, Nelson Mandela’s birthday is an annual call to action to people everywhere to contribute to the global movement for good by effecting change within their community.

18 July 2013 marks the 95th birthday of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, and the fourth Nelson Mandela International Day. After Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations in London’s Hyde Park in 2008, where he said “It is time for new hands to lift the burdens. It is in your hands now,” Mandela Day was born. The United Nations officially declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day in November 2009.

On 2 May 2013, the 27th Mandela Day container library opening took place. This is the second library by the Participate for Good Joberg2C campaign.

The morning of 25 April 2013 started in a frenzy at Mahlodumela Lower Primary School in Limpopo, with the arrival of two bakkie-loads and a trailer full of boxes containing books for the 26th Mandela Day container library.

On 22 February 2013 learners, parents and teachers gathered at Montshiwa Primary School to celebrate the official opening of the 24th container library, a brightly coloured library unit that was painted to reflect the colours of the South African flag.

On 30 January 2013 the 23rd Mandela Day container library was opened at Linge Junior Secondary School in Nyanga, the Western Cape. The library was sponsored by Irish Distillers, a company based in Dublin.

Friday 30 November, 2012 marked the opening of the 21st Mandela Day Container Library at Kebinelang Middle School in Manthe village (near Hartswater), in the North West province, five hours west of Johannesburg.
