The learners at Monene Primary School, in the village of Ga-Monene, north-west of Polokwane in Limpopo, waited in anticipation on 18 July to celebrate Mandela Day.

The school’s new library had been set up and was being stocked with books by the Participate for Good team in readiness for the library’s official opening.

Representatives from hydraulics engineering company Hytec South Africa, which donated the library, were greeted by the smiling faces of Grade R to 7 learners eager to see inside the library.

The occasion was full of celebration, and school governing chairperson Mrs RR Chauke and the principal, Mrs RN Mina, thanked Hytec for its generosity.

The children put on a splendid show of appreciation and were rewarded with chips and cool drinks supplied by Hytec. Outgoing Hytec MD Mike Harrison, who has been personally involved in funding 15 libraries over 11 years, reminded attendees that every day should be a Mandela Day, not just Nelson Mandela’s 18 July birthday.

The Mandela Education Programme is run by Participate for Good, a registered charity that focuses on literacy in both physical and digital forms from Grades R to 12.
