Helping hands, full stomachs: food parcels for Mandela Day, with the DP World Lions cricket team
South Africa is faced with a range of challenges, from unemployment, poverty and the rising cost of living. This contributes extensively to food insecurity and hunger, as food becomes expensive and inaccessible, more and more households experience hunger and food inadequacy.
What does food security mean?
According to the World Food Programme (WFP) food security is when people always have adequate and available access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food to maintain a healthy and active life. Over 2,6 million people have disclosed that they have inadequate and severe inadequate access to food. Efforts towards relieving this burden of not knowing where your next meal is coming from has become crucial for South Africa.
This Mandela Month, the DP World Lion’s cricket team, along with their partners Ashraful Aid and The Angel Network, will be launching a food packing initiative. The goal for the day is to pack 5 000 food parcels to provide nourishing meals to people. This initiative will bring people together to pack these parcels with love and care on the iconic cricket oval.
Why is this initiative important?
Food insecurity is a reality for South African households, with 50% of households living below the poverty line, unable to afford basic food, an initiative like this can ease the burden of wondering where your next meal is going to come from. This is an opportunity to make a positive impact where it matters.
With the target set, the Lion’s Cricket Pride is going to need all the help they can get. By joining this initiative, you can inspire other people to get involved and to contribute their time and resources. This is an initiative that will directly benefit community members. So show up and show solidarity.
The Lion’s club pride and their partners are calling on individuals and corporates to get involved to ensure that their target is met. Remember that it is still in your hands to combat poverty and inequity!
